Walks in the Community Area
There is some wonderful walking within the community area.
Below are some suggestions. You are invited to send photographs taken on any of the walks in the area to enquiry@colvendcommunity.co.uk and we will try and publish them.
Dalbeattie and Colvend
Dumfries & Galloway Council publish a 28-page leaflet describing local walks. Download the brochure for some of the best local walks.
The leaflet includes: The Dalbeattie to Colvend Trail, The Jubilee Path from Rockcliffe to Kippford, The Muckle Walk from Rockcliffe, to Castle Point from Rockcliffe and the whole coastal path from Rockcliffe to Sandyhills.
Rockcliffe
The National Trust for Scotland also has a number of trails based on Rockcliife. View them with a schematic on their leaflet. This also shows some of the routes above plus the route to Rough Island. Check the tides for Rough Island.
Rockcliffe to Sandyhills
The Walk Highlands website also has information on this walk with photographs. A lady named Ruth Livingstone was walking round the coast of Britain and did this walk in the opposite direction in April 2017. There are lots of photographs that she took showing the beauty of the coast on her blog.
RSPB Mersehead
There are good walks at Mersehead from the RSPB Visitor Centre. Their leaflet shows the routes.

You can also walk all the way to Southerness and Carsethorne along the beach from Mershead, or after Southerness turning inland at Powillimount and following an attractive path past John Paul Jones Cottage, to reach Carsethorne. A refreshment break at the Steamboat Inn, Carsethorne is highly recommended. You could wait here to catch the 372 bus back to the Mersehead road end if you have parked your car there.
Southwick Home Farm
From Southwick Home Farm on the A710 you can follow core path 171 to the Solway Fish Farm on the New Abbey to Beeswing road or over Lotus Hill to Beeswing itself. The start is signposted. These make great linear walks with fine views. Parking is limited at Southwick Home Farm. To make the most of these walks, consult the local bus time tables for the 372 and 501/502 services.
